To commemorate Emerald Ensemble's tenth anniversary, we present the complete partsongs of Joseph Haydn. Inspired by his encounters with English choirs, Haydn wrote these thirteen short works to introduce the genre to German-speaking ensembles. And it worked! The partsongs move fluidly between quiet contemplation and lighthearted humor, between devotion and play. They quickly became a cornerstone of German choral repertory in the early 1800s, and remain beloved today. We round out the program with similarly compact works by Haydn's greatest student, Beethoven, including three famed instrumental pieces arranged by his contemporaries for chorus.
